How to Tie Square Knots: Step-by-Step Guide with Video

We’ll start off with a simple, yet versatile knot - the square knot - which will enable you to create a crisp, contemporary look.

Have you seen women wearing a dress or jumpsuit tied with a stylish-looking knot? They’ve probably caught your eye because knots create dimension, accentuate a woman’s figure, and add some personal style. If you like the overall look a knot creates but aren’t exactly sure how to tie one, then you’re in the right place.

When you know how to tie a pretty knot on a dress, jumpsuit or other garment’s belt or sash, you won’t have to resort to tying a bulky - and sometimes uncomfortable - bow. Since square knots lie flat, they create a sophisticated, polished look. Find out how to tie a square knot with our instructions and videos below and you’ll soon be a pro at making them.

History of Square Knots

The square knot, also called a reef knot, has been used for centuries. Its history traces back to sailors and fishermen who relied on it for securing sails and nets. The knot's simple structure made it a go-to for tasks that needed a secure but easy-to-untie solution. Sailors used the phrase "reef knot" because it was often tied while reefing sails, a method to adjust them during strong winds.

Over time, the square knot found its way into everyday life. From first aid bandages to gift wrapping, its versatility became appreciated beyond the sea. Today, it’s even used in fashion, adding a clean and stylish touch to sashes, belts, and accessories. Its enduring popularity proves that simple techniques often stand the test of time!

How to Tie a Square Knot Step by Step?

  1. Begin by holding the left tie in your left hand and the right tie in your right hand.
  2. Cross the left tie over the right tie.
  3. Bring the end of the left tie back up through the center to form the first part of the knot.
  4. Pull the ties to tighten them, bringing them closer to the body while still allowing a little slack for movement.
  5. Hold the right tie in your right hand and the left tie in your left hand. This time, cross the right tie over the left tie.
  6. Bring the right tie back under the left tie and pull it through the loop and out the left side.
  7. Pull the ends to tighten the knot being careful not to make it too tight as this will crush the nice square in the middle.
  8. Smooth out the center of the tie by tugging the edges of the square knot.
  9. Position both ties to fall from the bottom corners of the square knot.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Avoiding mistakes when tying square knots helps them stay secure and look good. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Wrong tie order can result in a granny knot that isn’t as secure. Repeat the "left over right, right over left" sequence slowly to get it right.
  • Pulling the knot too tight can crush its shape and make it hard to adjust. Leave a bit of slack and smooth it out gently.
  • Uneven ends can make the knot look unbalanced. Make sure the ends fall neatly from the bottom corners of the square knot.

Practical Uses of Square Knots Beyond Fashion

Square knots have many uses beyond adding style to your outfits. Here are a few practical ways to use them:

  • Secure bandages in first aid without adding extra pressure to the wound.
  • Tie ribbons neatly when wrapping gifts to give them a polished look.
  • Use them for camping to tie ropes or secure lightweight items.
  • Add them to macramé or jewelry projects for a stylish and sturdy design.
  • Tie small parcels or bundles for easy handling or transport.

Upgrade Your Wardrobe with Stylish Knots

The key when tying a square knot is to remember: left over right, right over left. Note that the knot will also work if you do it as right over left, left over right.

Now that you know how to tie a square knot, you’ll be happy that you have another option aside from a bow to create a modern and stylish look. Be sure to explore our fabulous selection of dresses and jumpsuits to add a few new pieces to your wardrobe that we're sure will quickly become favorites!

The video went a bit too fast for me to keep up. I work better seeing visually than reading instructions- which weren’t that easy to understand. Maybe I’m stupid, but the instructions were rather confusing until I watched the video. Even then, the words made no sense. The video, if able, would be better slowed.

I was doing a craft that required the fabric be tied in a square knot. I think I learned in Girl Scouts but forgot. Thanks for a simple video- nailed it!
